INJURY LEVEL: L1
INJURY DATE: 3/29/2017
In a freak accident on March 29, 2017 I fell 30 feet; breaking the L1 vertebrae and the ulna and radius bones in my arm. Luckily, I don't remember the fall or much of what happened after. It all kind of felt like one of those surreal dreams where you wake up and think, 'Oh, thank God it wasn't real'. Except, I woke up and it was real.
Laying there not being able to move my legs felt so strange! I was heart broken at the thought that I would never be able to continue the sport I love: rock climbing. Climbing is who I am! It's my passion, my hobby, my job as a rock climbing coach. The task of re-learning to walk hadn't even crossed my mind yet...
After several weeks at Carolinas Rehab inpatient program, I had to learn the hard way that walking again was my first hurdle to jump. I refused to leave rehab in a wheelchair, and amazingly it worked out.
Starting at Race to Walk shortly after was the best thing that has happened to me since my accident! After a few months of throwing my everything into the workouts, I am walking again and without a crutch! There's still plenty of improvement to go on my walking, but I've jumped my first hurdle and the next one is getting back on the climbing wall!
